Why CatchWrench Exists
CatchWrench started in my own driveway. I built the tool I wished existed.
During an oil change on my truck, I wasn't fast enough - oil spilled down my socket onto my hands and I dropped the socket into my pan. I found myself fishing it and the drain plug out of the oil pan with a magnet and I thought to myself, there has to be a better way. I wished there was a tool that had:
- A built-in catch to stop oil from reaching my hands
-
A palm-sized grip that gave real control
- A low-profile design for tight clearances or when working with limited space
I searched everywhere — nothing like it existed. There were products meant to prevent dropping the drain plug, like magnetic tools, but they came with their own set of problems.
- No built-in-catch means oil still runs down the tool and drips on the ground
- Many drain plugs are aluminum — magnets don’t work
-
If the drain plug is steel, the magnet can bind to the oil pan itself - which prevents a clean release and create an even bigger mess
- Long, flimsy designs make tight spaces worse
I got right to prototyping — building a tool that was simple, durable and purpose-built.
- Integrated catch cone that stops oil before it reaches your hands
-
Compact enough for tight spaces, yet sized to feel natural and secure in your hand
- Strong enough for real use and drops
- Designed with socket retention
- Heat-resistant for hot oil changes
This product isn’t mass-produced overseas. It’s designed, engineered, and produced right here in the United States — by someone who actually uses it.
Oil changes don’t have to be messy.
They’ve just been accepted that way - until now.
